Carol Bernhardt of Mansfield was recently presented the American Federation of Musicians Local 159’s “President’s Award”.  This award was presented by Local 159 Executive Board member Pamela Ellis at the Local 159 Concert Band’s performance on July 7 at the South Park Pavilion in Mansfield, Ohio. Assisting in the presentation was Mark Maxwell, Secretary/Treasurer of AFM Local 159.

The annual "President’s Award" is presented to a member of Local 159 who has shown outstanding leadership qualities in addition to working  to promote live music in the area, and helping to promote Local 159  itself.  First presented in 1986, Carol has become the 31st  recipient of this prestigious award.

The incredible service that North Central Ohio has enjoyed for over half a century because of this outstanding music leader is unbelievable.  As an active member of Ohio Music Teachers’ Association, she has served as Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer of the Richland County Chapter, as well as the North Central Districts.  She has been a member of several symphonies including those of Mansfield and Ashland, and a member of the Tuscarawas, Ohio Symphony for 40 years. During this period of time, Carol has had a huge influence on hundreds, possibly thousands of oboe and piano students who have had the good fortune to study with her.  In addition, for over 20 years, she has organized and led not just one, but two woodwind trios that perform special music for many events and venues throughout the area. She has also been a member of the AFM 159 Concert Band for 53 years!  But perhaps her most important contribution to our community is bringing chamber music to us as administrator and founder of the annual Don Bernhardt Memorial Concerts.
